Roborace Courts Developers With Self-Driving Racer Prototype

Cocky-driving race cars are inching toward reality, though at a pace considerably slower than runway speed. This week, Roborace unveiled its self-driving machine image, a concept it hopes will spur the development of software that can one solar day compete on the Formula circuit.

Nextcar Bug art The prototype, dubbed DevBot in a nod to the developer support that Roborace is counting on to conductor in its vision of fully autonomous racing, is the caterpillar to the Robocar butterfly that currently merely exists on paper. The DevBot doesn't have striking looks; it vaguely resembles a conventional Formula One automobile, with a helicopter-cockpit-like bubble bolted to the top.

Underneath, though, information technology has the same drive-train, sensors, computation systems, and communication applied science as the future Robocar, the abstraction of entrepreneur Dennis Sverdlov and veteran racing designer Daniel Simon. Their Roborace thought would see teams of developers race identical cars, with the only possible advantages coming from software tweaks.

The DevBot volition let teams hoping to compete in the Roborace a gamble to hone their skills. Once the Robocar is completed, which could happen by the end of 2022, they'll be able to submit their racing algorithms and vie for the one thousand prize: a spot in an upcoming Formula East race, where their software will take on human competitors.
